Feline showdown

CRESTA - A Russian Bue might sound like a cocktail and the uninitiated might think a sphynx would be associated with Egyptian history. Wrong. These are rare cat breeds, and they will be on show for the public at the Rand Cat Club.

It’s the battle of the felines. The creme of cats will be strutting their stuff and facing off for the title of the Best Cat in Gauteng on 27 September.

This Championship Cat show is being held by Rand Cat Club at Randpark Club, and about 120 cats of various breeds will be on show and literally cat-walking for the judges.

“Some of the amazing cats on show are regular favourite breeds: Persians, Siamese, Burmese and then the more unusual and rare cats, like Sphynx (naked cats), Birmans, Siberian Forest cats and Russian Blues,” Southern African Cat Council member and breeder Karen Pepler says.

“The biggest cats on the show scene, the Maine Coons will be there in equally large numbers.”

Pepler says owners and breeders of all these cats will be happy to show off their lovely animals. There will even be classes for rescue cats and ‘pavement specials’ to show their stuff.

The show will be open to members of the public from 9am to 4pm and will be staged in the Azalea room on the first floor of the club building, in Setperk Street.

Rand Cat Club is affiliated to the Southern Africa Cat Council. Representatives from Royal Canin (the company sponsoring the show) will be available all day to advise visitors regarding nutrition and products for the cats and dogs.
