Calling all touch rugby players

ROODEPOORT – Entries for the West Rand Touch Rugby League are now open.

So you thought rugby couldn’t get any cooler?

Well, the West Rand Touch Rugby League is fast approaching its kick-off and teams from as far as Pretoria and surrounding suburbs like Randburg will be joining in the action.

The league commences on 17 September and will lasts for 10 weeks.

Roodepoort’s very own Team Bob, Staalballe and Old Bones are just some of the teams set to participate in the league.

Events coordinator for Supertouch Kobus Kruger says entries are now open for interested candidates.

“Individual players, school coaches, corporate companies and lady teams in the West Rand area are encouraged to enter their teams into the West Rand Touch Rugby League to avoid disappointment,” he says.

“The West Rand Touch Rugby League is played every Wednesday evenings from 7pm in Krugersdorp (Rant en Dal), at the Sterkfontein Heritage Lodge,” he adds.

Kruger says touch rugby is a fantastic sport for fitness and allows people of all ages to take to the field together.

“Whether you are young or old, the Touch Rugby League caters for all those interested in cardiovascular, non-contact fun. The standard of play ranges from a social level to very competitive. We have players as young as 13 years in the league,” he informs.

Asked how different touch rugby is from traditional rugby, Kruger says, “Touch rugby is a fast, skilful and action-packed team sport, played in a fun and social atmosphere, without any of the tackling you see in a traditional game of Rugby League”.

Kobus also mentions that a cash bar and delectable will be available – a perfect scene for a family and friends night out with a difference.

At least 24 sides are expected to join in the tackle-free fun when the league officially kicks off.
