South Africa shakes, rattles and rolls

JOBURG- Tremor felt in most parts of South Africa is said to have originated 5.3 - 6km East of Orkney.

South African residents went atwitter after a tremor was felt in most parts of the country.

The tremor was felt minutes after midday and lasted for roughly a minute.

According to the US Geological Survey website the tremor measured 5.3 on the richter scale and happened 6km east of Orkney in the North West province. Reports also indicated the tremor was felt in some parts of Bloemfotein, Free State and Durban.

There are reports that the ground shook further afield as far as Botswana and Lesotho.

“I was driving and I thought I was going to die, it was very scary,” said Anna Davids who felt the tremor in Bethlehem in the Free State.

“I was hard at work, I was the last to react because I thought it was the wind and then I thought it is winter, the kicks of a dying hoarse. Everyone in the office went outside to see what happened,” said Mongezi Nombewu and IT programmer at Kazazoom in Greenside.

At this stage it is not certain to the cause of the tremor.

This tremor comes after one was reported in Johannesburg on 18 November2013 and another on 3 December 2013.
