Bruce Fordyce launches village for disadvantaged runners

BRYANSTON - Bruce Fordyce and Complete Marathon are launching runners village for disadvantaged runners who don't have funds for accommodation.

BRYANSTON –There is hope for qualified comrade marathon athletes who are currently disadvantaged, Bruce Fordyce and Complete Marathon said today at a press launch in Bryanston.

Fordyce and Complete Marathon are getting ready to launch Runners’ Village at next year’s 90th Comrades Marathon which is suitable for homeless runners who don’t have funds for accommodation.

This initiative follows the successful pilot of Bruce Fordyce’s Complete Marathons concierge service at this year’s Comrades Marathon for all local and overseas participants.

Speaking at the press launch, Fordyce announced that the goal is to sponsor disadvantaged South African runners from various running clubs within the country, who already qualify for the Comrades Marathon and have an income of less than R3 000.

“We aim to house and cater for the disadvantaged athletes before, during and after key races in shared accommodation,” he said.

Fordyce hit on the idea of the Runners’ Village – which will consist of a two-man tent with two mattresses, two blankets, branded fly sheets, a solar light and sleeping bags.

“Each beneficiary will have access to full ablutions, including showers and toilet facilities. Race lockers will also be provided to assist the runners in keeping their gear safely stored.” The renowned Comrades star further explained that “it is very important for us as a company to give back to the community.”

All running clubs in South Africa will be approached and advised of the opportunity that exists for disadvantaged runners from their club to be included at the Complete Marathon Village.

“Each club will need to provide a written motivation identifying the runners they would like to recommend for consideration,” said the South African running legend.

Fordyce also aims to train and mentor athletes.

“We will also provide guaranteed race support at designated route points where strategically placed marquees will cater for runners, giving access to pre-packed race items, support, ablutions and meeting facilities for family and friends,” he informed.
