Wood evening a success

FERNDALE – Woodworking for Everyone book has solid sales during its book evening at the Cupboard Hardware Centre.

Woodworker Peter Alkema’s book evening at the Cupboard Hardware Centre, Ferndale, on 21 May was a solid success.

The evening was for the launch of his book Woodworking For Everyone, which managing member at the centre, Viv Martin praised.

“Our brand at Hardware Centre is Fine Woodworking Specialists and Peter Alkema has created a book which shows you practical steps and beautiful photos about how to make some fine furniture for your home,” he said.

Alkema’s philosophy is to make furniture or wooden objects you need, but if you do buy objects from the shops, to improve them.

His book teaches the reader how to complete 13 woodworking projects of varying difficulty– step by step.

Projects include making household furniture such as toy boxes, nursery shelves, school desks, benches, Wendy houses and more.

About 35 people attended the book evening from as far as Durban, Springs and even the United Kingdom (UK) (the author’s mother).

All books on sale were sold out.

One father attended and said that he recently made a rocking horse for his one-year-old child and now plans to make the nursery shelf project from the book.

Alkema joked that he tried to contact Julius Malema, who took woodworking in high school, to see if he would like a copy of the book as Alkema believes there is a strong job creation aspect to the book, but Malema did not reply.

The book’s website contains more information.
