Daredevils plan next world record

JOBURG - Andre De Kock and Enrico Schoeman will attempt to set a new fire tunnel world record in 2014.

After successfully setting a new Guiness world record of the longest motorcycle ride through a 103.09m long tunnel of fire, Andre De Kock and Enrico Schoeman plan to break their own record.

The pair will attempt to set a new record of riding through a 120m specially constructed fire tunnel in 2014

In 2012, De Kock (The Citizen motoring editor) and Schoeman (a freelance photographer) rode through a 900?C scorching tunnel for 7.5 seconds and managed to come out the other end intact.

The gruelling nature of the activity is what makes it so desirable to the pair, even when the repercussions may seem fatal.

“You can’t see anything when you are riding through the tunnel and if you crash into the structure you could die,” De Kock revealed.

“You can’t even breathe in there because you’ll inhale the fumes, so you have to hold your breath throughout.”

Schoeman categorises himself and De Kock as daredevils rather than stuntmen as they take the risk several notches further.

“To the guys in America it is show business but to us it isn’t. We want to make it as dangerous as possible because we want to be on the edge.”

De Kock and Schoeman also use their stunting abilities as a campaign to support cancer patients, having lost loved ones to the dreaded disease.

To raise awareness, Schoeman has painted the Australian sidecar motorbike they use to perform the fire tunnel stunts pink.

“CANSA (Cancer Association of South Africa) once used the fire tunnel photo to convey to those undergoing chemotherapy that it’s going to be tough, but you can come out on the other side,” De Kock said.

De Kock and Schoeman extend their gratitude to the sponsorships and help that made the record possible.
