Lions return after exciting KZN tournament

The Golden Lions Youth Rugby teams overcame weather challenges and enjoyed rare experiences, like snowball fights, as they competed in the KZN Inter-Provincial Tournament.

The Golden Lions Youth Rugby teams are back home in Johannesburg after an exciting week of action at the Inter-Provincial Tournament (IPT) in KZN.
The tour started with a twist as unexpected snowfall in KZN forced the Lions’ entourage to detour via Bergville. However, this unexpected event gave the young players a rare chance to enjoy the stunning views and play in the snow, an experience many of them had never had before.

Learners that represented their countries.

Despite the unpredictable weather that ranged from gale-force winds to sunny skies, the Lions adapted well and embraced the challenges. For some players, this trip marked not only their first time playing in different conditions but also their first opportunity to swim in the sea and spend time away from home.

Heather Dolley, the chairperson of Golden Lions Youth Rugby, shared her pride in the team’s performance. “These 176 players came together and showed everyone what it means to play in a Lions jersey. We might not have won all the gold medals but as a union, we certainly won the week.”

She also expressed her deep gratitude to the managers, coaches, and chaperones who gave up their time to support the players throughout the tournament.

A special mention was given to Reckless Bear and Substitch, whose kit designs were a hit among the players and other teams, becoming the talk of the tournament.

With the 2024 tournament now over, the focus shifts to the 2025 IPT, which will be hosted in Johannesburg. The Golden Lions Youth Rugby is already preparing and looks forward to working with potential sponsors to make the next tournament even more memorable.

U13 Lions – 4th overall

U14 Lions – Silver

U15 Lions – Gold – undefeated throughout the tournament

U16 Lions – Gold

U18 Lions – Bronze

U16 Girls – Gold

U18 Girls – Gold.
