Diggers pair gets the opportunity of a lifetime to represent SA in the Rugby Travel Academy U18 invitational team

Both players and their families are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support so far, but more is still needed to make their participation a reality.

Diggers Club players’s Luke Roos and Alerick Rachstein are set to take on the world at a prestigious rugby tournament.

Roos, who’s a wing, and Rachstein, a scrum half, have been selected to join the Rugby Travel Academy (RTA) U18 SA invitational team, a prestigious accomplishment that will see them competing in the World Schools Rugby Festival in Abu Dhabi from December 14–21. The opportunity is not only a career-defining moment but a life-changing experience for these talented Northcliff High School athletes.

The World Schools Rugby Festival is known for attracting the best school rugby teams from across the globe, with renowned institutions like Eton College (England), Hartpury College (England), West Lake Boys High School (New Zealand), and Dr EG Jansen (South Africa) all taking part. Being selected to compete on such a prestigious international stage is a testament to the dedication and talent that the pair have demonstrated throughout their high school rugby careers.

The tournament offers them a chance to represent their country, immerse themselves in a diverse cultural environment, and open doors to potential rugby and academic opportunities.

But, like many once-in-a-lifetime experiences, the cost of participating in this tour is significant. The boys need to raise approximately R126 000 to cover all expenses, which includes R52 900 per player for the tour itself, as well as additional costs like travel insurance, visas, and spending money. To support their dream, a BackaBuddy campaign has been launched and the community is rallying behind them by organizing fundraising events.

Claire Roos said that they are beyond proud of these boys and this tournament is not only a major rugby opportunity but an incredible experience that will shape their futures.

“We hope the community continues to support them, whether through donations, sponsorships, or attending our fundraiser events. The rugby world is watching as these young talents prepare to take the next big step in their sporting careers. Any donation, no matter how small, will bring Luke and Alerick one step closer to representing South Africa at one of the world’s most prestigious school’s rugby tournaments.”
