Runners take on the cold at Randburg Hariers Vitality Run

Marshals keep 5 000 runners going on 5km, 10km and 21km routes.

Not everyone has the guts to run on an icy cold morning, but 5 000 people did at the Vitality Run hosted by Randburg Harriers Running Club.

Some brave souls even wore short pants and shirts as they tackled the 5km, 10km and 21km routes, but most dressed warm with gloves, long pants, jerseys and headware. The roads were quiet in the suburbs around Randburg Sports Complex.

Still, marshals were posted at every major intersection and turn to direct runners and motorists. It was their cheering and encouragement that helped one or two labouring runners beat the notorious hills in the area and ultimately cross the line.

“There was a variety of coffee stations and stalls to help the runners keep warm after their run,” explained the club’s public relations officer Buwi Moeketsi. “Some even chose to bring blankets and heavy jackets. Dancing to the performer and DJ’s music was also another way to keep the cold at bay.”

Next up, the club has its annual Chairman’s Grog Jog a whole four months away on December 6. This is a 5km fun run where the ‘water points’ are are different bars, so drinking is encouraged.

“It gives runners something fun to look forward to, where fitness isn’t necessary. The aim is to have fun,” Moeketsi concluded.
