Curro Aurora cheerleaders win national and African titles

School cheerleaders retain titles and win new trophies at SA and African championships.

The Sundowner school sent 50 learners from its primary and high schools to compete at the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association nationals and the African Championships that followed, at Queensmead Hockey Stadium.

This was the most learners the school has sent to the event as it hoped to defend its primary school all-girls and co-ed division titles from last year. It did exactly this, maintaining first place from the start to the very end of the tournament and winning the all-girl large division as well as the co-ed small division.

Curro Aurora’s cheerleaders did exceptionally well at nationals and African championships.

The 32 high school learners were in a pool of 693 cheerleaders from schools and clubs across the country. The Curro blues team had already had a very successful season and won all their categories at the Gauteng provincial championships just a few weeks earlier, including the co-ed and all-girl group stunts as well as the co-ed partner stunts.

They were determined to add the extra hours of practice needed to make sure they were ready and in winning contention. They came, they saw, and they conquered. The Curro Aurora Blue Ice team won gold in the all-girl small division, while the school’s Blue Storm team won the co-ed small division.

The high school co-ed team builds a pyramid at the championships.

This qualified them for the International Cheer Union African Cheerleading Championships. Team Blue Ice won gold in junior all-girl, while team Blue Storm won silver in junior co-ed.
