Bordeaux wrestler aims to give it his all at the Wrestling World Championships

Dominick Aoun is focusing on power, speed and timing at the tournament in Turkey.

Bordeaux wrestling star, Dominick Aoun aims to give it his all and enjoy his first Wrestling World Championships.

The 14-year-old South African and African champion will compete in the 48kg freestyle U17 category in Turkey in August. This is the division in which he proved to be the best in the continent during the African champs in Tunisia recently, beating the host country’s champion in the final. He also won silver in the Greco-Roman style.

“This will be my first world champs and I am very excited to compete,” he said. “I just want to do my best, to give all I have got. As they say, you do not stop after you reach the top.”

The moment Dominick Aoun won his gold medal at the African Championships. Coach Jan Roets celebrates with the youngster.

Dominick is training under a few coaches, including his father Fadi. “Dominick has been doing very well in wrestling but he is not neglecting MMA and is training under Soldier Boy [Garreth McLellan] for that,” he explained.
But the wrestling world championships are the next immediate challenge and understandably all the focus is on this. “Dominick is watching his diet and eating very healthy. He is training three times a day and we are emphasising power, speed and timing. We are also working on focus and the mental side of it all.”

That said, the youngster will be in the U17 division for two years still, so while everyone is pushing hard, they are also realistic about his prospects at the first world championships, which no South African has been able to win yet.
Yet if anyone can make history, it is this confident, dedicated and extremely talented youngster from Bordeaux.

Funds are being raised for Dominick to attend the championship in Turkey and the community has been asked to assist through his backabuddy page.
