Randburg’s first-ever business doubles champs proves a blast

Nearly 40 pairs of players test their mettle against each other at the club's first-ever event of its kind.

Randburg Squash Club is hosting its first-ever business doubles championships.

The inaugural event has almost 40 pairs of players competing for glory and it is hoped this will grow into an even larger tournament in the coming years.

“The tournament is going very well. Our aim is for players to be exposed to different styles, as many are trying doubles for the first time while others have been playing it for a while,” said the club’s marketing coordinator Michelle Arpin.

She said there are a number of business doubles tournaments and leagues around Joburg, so this is a good litmus test for players to see how their skills compare and if this is something they want to take more seriously.

“Of course we want players to have fun. That is important. We are also using this as a fundraiser to get solar power for the club,” Arpin added.

Participants include five pairs in the women’s section, 18 in the men’s and 16 in the mixed section. Several people are playing in more than one section and the schedule has been busy. But Arpin expects the championships to be finished by the end of September.

Situated next to the Blairgowrie Recreation Centre, Randburg Squash Club has long provided an outlet for residents and workers in the area to enjoy the game in a quiet and accessible setting.
