Old Parks bowlers take surprise win at JBA Fours Tournament

Bowlers decided to enjoy the tournament and not place pressure on themselves, before going on to win the whole thing.

An unexpected trophy win came as a joyous surprise for a group of women from Old Parktonian Bowls Club.

“We wanted to play good bowls and enjoy ourselves. We had nothing to lose and no pressure; we treated each game as a tabs game but it took a lot of concentration and focus,” said Eileen Breakey, a member of the team of four who won gold at the Johannesburg Bowls Association Fours Tournament on the weekend May 27–28.

The tournament was held at Belgravia Bowling Club in Bedfordview and featured the best bowls clubs in the district.

Breakey was joined by Carole Gray, Sue Berry and Helena Kruger. “We played as a team; that was also the secret to our success. We’re still in a state of shock at our win.”

Club manager at Old Parks Lizette Driescher said they were very proud of the group.

The bowls club will next host their annual Sheila Fox Charity Bowls tournament on June 7. This will be a women’s trip tournament.

“Players have been asked to donate items of tinned food, personal items, and so on, as a portion of the proceeds will be donated to a women’s shelter in Krugersdorp,” Breakey added. Bowlers can still sign up for this if they contact Breakey at 082 453 2168.
