Randburg Cricket Club has room to improve in Jozi Cup

Randburg struggle in the Jozi Cup but take away valuable experience they can use in the summer season.

Randburg Cricket Club is playing in the Jozi Cup for the first time this year.
Though it has been a steep learning curve for the club, players and coaches have learnt much from this prestigious event that acts as the Central Gauteng League’s winter tournament.

Club media liaison Bonang Nkiti said they have entered two U11 teams, an U13 and U16 side, the men’s seniors Premier League team and the women’s Premier League side.

The men’s Premier League team is in the yellow group along with other Kagiso, Wanderers and Old Parktonian cricket clubs.

Thapelo Mahamo bats for Randburg in the Jozi Cup.

“Randburg have played these three clubs in the competition so far and have come up short every time, losing out to Kagiso Cricket Club at the Kagiso Oval on May 14 by seven wickets,” Nkiti said.

On May 21, Randburg played a double-header, first losing out to Wanderers Cricket Club by eight wickets, unsuccessfully defending a score of 124/8. Wanderers scored 129 and lost only two wickets in the process. In the second match, Randburg lost out to Old Parks who batted first and scored 196/1. Randburg eventually fell short with 147/7.

“In our campaign so far, the highest individual score by a batsman was by Tiaan Raubenheimer who scored 45 not out off 28 balls against Old Parks. Our leading run scorer in the tournament so far is captain Austin Bruggen with scores of 15, 32 and 20 in the three matches.”

Dylan Crothall bowls for Randburg.

The club has an interim manager for the tournament, Nathan Malgas, who is confident the players will benefit from their experience and this will help them compete at all levels in the summer season.

“As is evidenced by the scores, the batters are beginning to adapt to a different approach and getting to grips with the demands of the format with its special rules,” he said.

“I’m excited by the growth I have seen in the players and the team since the start of the competition, and while we may not be in contention for the final at the Wanderers, we will end off the tournament having given some of the clubs we will face in the summer cause for concern as we pursue top honours in all leagues.”

Further fixtures are still to be revealed by organisers.
