Goals, goals and more goals were scored during exciting netball and soccer action at Tom Sundawo’s annual fundraiser at Old Parktonian Sports Club.
Cold and cloudy weather did not dampen the mood of community members who turned up for the event – which also saw a fun auction take place – at the Fast Sports Fusion 5-a-side fields in Bordeaux on May 1.
The fundraiser has been held since 2013, albeit with a break in 2020 and 2021, and this was the first time netball was included. “We have netball by popular demand as not everyone wants to play soccer,” Sundawo smiled. He was wrapped in warm clothing, watching from the sidelines in his wheelchair with friends and other residents of Ann Harding Cheshire Home.
“I was a bit nervous at first that it would go well, but everyone is having fun. I am grateful for the support of those who came.” About 112 people signed up to play one of the sports on the day.
Sundawo has been confined to a wheelchair since 2007 when he was shot in the head at point-blank range during an armed robbery. This was at a restaurant he was managing in Auckland Park. The fundraiser helps cover his accommodation, medication and care at the home in Northwold.
Ann Harding Cheshire Home’s fundraising manager Jackie Kyle said the chocolate, cosmetics and wine hampers for auction were a great addition to the day.
Kathrine Campbell and Osman Mungana watched the sport from the clubhouse. “I love these fundraisers, I always enjoy the atmosphere,” Campbell said. Mungana said it was his first time and he would play if called upon.
