Randburg cyclists do proud at Emperors Palace Road Classic

Flat and fast routes prove to create exciting finishes at the Emperors Palace Road Classic.

A number of Randburg-based cyclists crowded the podiums at the Emperors Palace Road Classic.

The annual ‘Race of Dreams’ returned to the streets of Ekurhuleni on March 26 with about 3 000 cyclists participating.

The 48km and 98km routes were flat and fast and made for exciting racing.

Marshals had even gone out in the preceding days to repair potholes and ensure the race was fair and there would be no incidents due to poor roads.

Linden resident Nathan Atkins won the overall men’s section in the shorter distance event in a time of 01:18:45.

His Linden neighbour Rohan du Plooy was on a podium not far away for finishing second in the elite men’s 98km event.

This race had an incredible finish and Du Plooy crossed the line in the middle of the pack of top-three cyclists who ended within a second.

The recorded times were Gustav Basson winning in 02:10:56; Du Plooy split seconds behind him in 02:10:56; and Johan Trotzky in third in 02:10:57.

Not to be undone by the men, Zoe Salwedel of Randpark Ridge shone in the 48km U17 girls category.

She finished in 01:20:00, just 0.25 seconds behind first-placed Jennah Jacobs.
