Linden mini-flyweight and SA champion just about ready to fight outside the region

Coach speaks about his top fighters as they prepare for the biggest bouts.

Boxing coach Alan Toweel believes South African mini-flyweight champion Bangile Nyangani is about two fights away from taking his career out of Africa and into the rest of the world.

Training out of the Alan Toweel Boxing Gym in Linden, Nyangani will have his mandatory title defence fight against former champion Siyakholwa Kuse in Durban on March 30.

Speaking on SA Boxing Talk, Toweel said January and February were quiet but his renowned fighters were rearing to go in some prestigious events coming up.

The big fight for Nyangani is top of his mind but Toweel believed his fighter would repeat his majority decision win over his opponent as was the case last year.

“I say ‘when he wins’ because he has been training extremely hard, totally committed, hopefully, work him towards a World Boxing Association international title fight and he will be in line for a big one then,” Toweel said, adding he believed the boxer was only two fights away from an international eliminator fight.

Bangile Nyangani and Alan Toweel celebrate one of the fighter’s many title defences in recent months.

“He is really there you know. Should he get a good win on March 30, the next fight should be against an international opponent. He deserves it. He has shone in that division.”

Nyangani is ranked in the top 13 regionally according to different governing bodies. He is eighth according to the World Boxing Association, 13th in the World Boxing Organisation, the World Boxing Council has him as 13th, and 12th in the International Boxing Federation. Toweel is excited about the next couple of months for him.

The coach is also aiming to organise a fight for Tshifhiwa Munyai in Limpopo in June, though if he can organise a fight for him before then Toweel will.

This follows a win in December for the junior welterweight against Malawian Crispin Moliati in Polokwane.

“Big fights is what people want to see in this country, you know. Big money fights. The best have to fight the best.”
