Tennis tips from coach at Olivedale Tennis Club

Focus on control because power comes later – tennis coach tells young players.

If you want to find the next Federer, Nadal or Djokovic you wouldn’t have to look that far.

There are always tennis lessons on the go at Olivedale Tennis Club and the sounds of smashes and instruction from dedicated coaches, ring out daily.

One of those coaches committed to producing great players is Gordon Wilson.

Operating under the Kinetik Tennis Academy banner, Wilson loves to spend his afternoons helping youngsters reach their potential on the courts.

Hours pass going over forehands, backhands, volleys, smashes and serves.

“Footwork is the most important skill to have,” Wilson said after a lesson with the young and talented Albrecht Swiegers.

“You must be able to move on a tennis court with light feet using small steps on your toes.”

Control is key, the coach also advised. Power comes later.

So as a young tennis player, it is best to rally with an opponent rather than ‘just hitting them off the court’.

“Motivate yourself and set goals for yourself so you can improve weekly and then it will be more rewarding when you do achieve those things.”

Wilson advised young players to never give up, as they always learn from their mistakes and turn weaknesses into strengths.
