Linden canoeists complete first Fish River Canoe Marathon

One of the major obstacles was the 3m-high Craddock Weird at the marathon.

Two canoeists from Linden completed their first ever Fish River Canoe Marathon this year.

The women, Tarryn Willis and Anja Burger, were joined by the more experienced Chad Andrews, who steered their boat to finish his 17th event.

The marathon took place at in Cradock in the Eastern Cape – the race down Fish River encompassing 80km of wild water splashing, and numerous challenging rapids over two days.

A number of paddlers from Gauteng gathered at Grassridge Dam for the start of the exciting fun-filled river race with its exciting weirs, rapids and wave trains.

Chad Andrews, Anja Marie Burger and Tarryn Willis reach the top of Cradock Weir.

Craddock Weir in itself is a famous 3m-high V-shaped obstacle.

The Linden pair thoroughly enjoyed their experience with the Fish River white water rapids.

Burger is also the President of Stand-Up Paddling, and Willis is a medical representative. Their goal is to encourage other women to paddle.

Andrews’ goal is apparently to be an Avenger and he works for Canoe Concepts and has been around paddling for at least 20 years.

The team completed the two-day race in a time of 6:49:00 minutes as the 18th K3 to cross the finish line and the 13th mixed double finisher.
