Why you should do muay thai

National fighter, Richard Spagnolo says the martial art can benefit anyone.

The martial art that is muay thai has many physical and psychological benefits.

Anyone can do it and there is no better time to start than now.

So said national muay thai fighter, Richard Spagnolo (21), who has returned from competing at the recent World Muay Thai Championships in Abu Dhabi.

The Fontainebleau fighter reached the quarter-finals of his age group’s 63–77kg category.

“I believe that muay thai is the best self-defence martial art there is,” said Richard, who trains at Elite MuayThai.

“It is free-flowing, unlike other martial arts, and you can bring your own style into it. You do not have to be large, or young or old to do it.”

He recited his father and trainer, David Spagnolo, who tells students that speed beats power but technique beats speed.

“Muay thai stimulates the brain and helps people take out their anger or frustrations. It is also a great way to meet people because we train together and support each other.”

Muay thai is an ancient combat sport and form of self-defence from Thailand.

According to Elite MuayThai. the martial art cultivates an appreciation for skills, dedication and self-mastery.

It uses stand-up striking along with various clinching techniques. Muay thai is known as the ‘art of eight limbs’ as it uses combinations of fists, elbows, knees, and shins.

Known as one of the most rigorous martial arts it is widely cited around the world as one of the most effective fighting styles. It also requires conditioning and fitness which is a hallmark of martial art.
