Muay thai fighter earns win as he prepares for world champs and hopefully future Olympics

FONTAINEBLEAU – Richard Spagnolo wins Eclipse Fight League event through a knockout as early as the second round.

Elite Muay Thai is celebrating another success after one of its fighters earned an emphatic win in the Eclipse Fight League.

Richard Spagnolo (21) took another step toward fulfilling his goal of going pro by winning his match against Mathys du Randt with a knockout victory in just the second round.

“We are extremely happy with the result, Richard followed the game plan we had,” Spagnolo’s kru (instructor) and father, David, said after the win in Centurion on February 27.

“He can take a lot of hits and his power-to-weight ratio is very good. Richard is very quick and his kicks could drop an elephant. We are working on scoring quickly ahead of the world championships.”

The World Muay Thai championships will take place in Abu Dhabi in May, and Spagnolo has been working hard on his conditioning to compete in the 63–67kg weight division.

“I have lost weight and trained hard to compete in this division and go pro,” he told Randburg Sun.

“After the world championships, I will focus on the Olympics and becoming one of the first, if not the first, South African to compete in Muay Thai at the Olympics.”

Muay Thai has only recently been made an Olympic sport and may only see it incorporated in several years.

Elite Muay Thai is affiliated with the South African Muay Thai Institute, which is part of the International Federation of Muaythai Associations.
