More players and teams at Darrenwood Sports Club

DARRENWOOD - Local tennis club goes from strength to strength this year.

Things are ever on the up at Darrenwood Sports Club, whether they are tennis balls or the general state of affairs.

Chairperson and club captain Neil van Loggerenberg said 2020 had been a tough year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and lockdown, but membership is up and people are enjoying tennis more than ever.

“We used to have just the one men’s team in the Tennis South Africa Central Gauteng league for the past few years, but next year we will be able to play two men’s teams and a women’s team,” he said.

“We are having more players join up, especially junior members. So it is all looking positive. We had great club championships and and end of year Christmas event and prizegiving.”

One highlight for Van Loggerenberg, who also coaches at the club through his company, Neils’ Tennis Coaching, is that four players of the club will compete in the inter-provincials in Bethlehem in February.

“We have also opened a pay as you go for people to use our facilities. Next year we hope to keep increasing our membership, and membership participation, and we want to resurface one of the courts.”
