Randburg Cricket Club’s local league suspended, but the club is proud of season

PRAEGVILLE – Cricketers don't let the suspension of games and practices get them down after great season.

Randburg Cricket Club (RCC) had to suspend its first Randburg Premier League after the move back to adjusted level 4 lockdown.

But the club based at Randburg Sports Complex is staying positive and looking forward to when they can meet on the pitch again.

Even practices were put on hold after President Cyril Ramaphosa told the nation on 27 June that gatherings were banned.

“The Randburg Premier League was suspended last week due to the rise in Covid-19 infections in the province,” explained the club’s Philasande Sixaba.

“RCC is also monitoring the Covid-19 situation together with Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) to ensure the safety of all its cricketers.”

He added that the club elected a new committee recently to continue the ‘great work that the previous committee had done to elevate the club’.

This included the election of Arabile Gumede as the new chairperson, taking over from Andy Mokgabi, who served two successful terms.

Sixaba thanked Mokgabi for all his work for Randburg Cricket Club.

This after the club played in its first season of the Premier A League and finished in an impressive fifth place, which was the target the club committee and players had in mind.

The official league season under CGL was shortened this year, starting in February and ending mid-April.

“Because of the uncertainty caused by Covid-19, the coaches and players were happy with the outcome and the cricket was of a very high and competitive standard,” concluded Sixaba.
