Randburg Bowls Club hosts families for fun barefoot bowls

BOSKRUIN – Community members play cricket bowls and raise funds for Cansa.

Families had a blast when a day of barefoot bowls also featured cricket bowls and a bring and braai at Randburg Cricket Club.

The sun shone kindly as young and old took to the two greens of the Boskruin-based bowling club on 1 May.

Funds raised from the event also went to the Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa), a non-profit organisation that supports survivors and families of survivors of cancer.

“We wanted the new bowlers to experience fun on the bowls green, recognise that bowls can be a fun sport for all ages and mix with some of the members and experience the social aspect of Randburg Bowls Club,” said club president Laurie Stafford.

“In the cricket you have two teams playing against each other on adjoining rinks. One rink is a batting rink where you deliver the bowls into circular targets. The smallest target being a six, the second smallest being a four and the outer circle being one run.”

The bowling rink has a set of wickets with bails. The bowler has to deliver the bowl so it dislodges the bails.

For traditional bowlers this proved a fun new challenge, while novel bowlers were introduced to the game that is said to be ‘easy to learn but difficult to master’, in a different format.

About R3 500 was raised for Cansa.

Volunteer, Ester Pretorius was grateful to receive the donation. “We are glad to be here and for the support of the community,” she said.

“It has been needed a lot lately, especially since lockdown when funding decreased a bit.”
