The Cricket Coaches host lessons safely at Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge

RANDPARK RIDGE – Local cricketers go for coaching ahead of the resumption of matches.

Young cricketers have been engaging in private coaching as they wait for club and school cricket matches to resume.

Coaching company The Cricket Coaches have helped in this regard with lessons at Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge.

“Central Gauteng Lions have been very proactive regarding the coronavirus and we have been given the chance to play while other unions are still not back,” said Jody Martins, who is a partner of the company along with Matthew Arnold.

“Cricket clubs have been back at training and their senior matches have already resumed. The junior cricketers will go back soon. Then schools cricket may resume matches by the end of February, I think.”

He added that after the first wave of Covid-19, most players were happy to return to training, but after the second wave numbers have only increased marginally.

“At The Cricket Coaches we do the screening, temperature checks and sanitising. All the balls are sanitised between lessons.”

The safety protocols the coaching company has in place were presented to Central Gauteng Lions and approved.

Martins believed cricket was a safe sport to play in a pandemic if all protocols were followed.

“I hope society is realising that Covd-19 will be around for some time longer. Everyone should adhere to protocols and be safe.”

For the younger cricketers, this sometimes requires prompting by older players and coaches.

Martins is also head coach at Randburg Cricket Club Juniors but will pass that baton on soon ahead of his move to Mossel Bay.

He will still manage The Cricket Coaches with Arnold from there.
