Bowls finals a blast

BOSKRUIN – All the club's competitions culminated in an exciting weekend of skilled and competitive, yet friendly, finals featuring bowlers from ages 15 to 85.

After the competitive bowls year was sorely affected by Covid-19 and the nationwide lockdown, Boskruin-based Randburg Bowls club successfully completed their internal competitions recently.

All the club’s competitions culminated in an exciting weekend of skilled and competitive, yet friendly, finals featuring bowlers from ages 15 to 85.

The club competitions attracted most of the club members and got underway in October last year.

However, they were interrupted by the lengthy lockdown and only resumed when restrictions allowed for this in August.

The competitions were still played under the club’s Covid-19 safety protocols. The resumption saw many close and exciting bowls matches being contested with a number of the more fancied bowlers being eliminated by newer or less competitive bowlers.

“It is great that we were finally able to complete the finals after a long, testing year on and off the bowls greens,” said club president, Laurie Stafford.

“What was even more pleasing is to see the number of younger and newer bowlers coming through and competing in the finals. Our ladies singles handicap winner has been bowling for less than a year.”

Stafford added that bowls has become an ideal sport to take up in light of the coronavirus as it is safe to play.

“We would like to invite everybody from eight to 80 to come and try bowls,” he said,
