Spooky Halloween night run a hit at Randpark Golf Club

RANDPARK – A whopping 154 ghouls, vampires, superheroes, stormtroopers, fairies and other scary spirits spent Halloween at Randpark Golf club for a spooky night run.

A whopping 154 ghouls, vampires, superheroes, storm troopers, fairies and other scary spirits spent Halloween at Randpark Golf club for a spooky night run.

The SHE (Sports Health Empower) Halloween Fun Run powered by Run Zone Athletics Club saw 2.5km and 5km runs through the golf course with scares along the route.

This was the first Halloween run organised by the Northcliff-based running club but it was so successful, all involved hope it will happen again.

“We had two weeks to put the run together but it was a big success,” said Run Zone’s owner and chairperson, Graham Block.

“The vibe was great and so many people dressed up. From the little nappy dash runners to the adults, every one put in effort dressing up.”

Goodie bags with all sorts of sweets were provided to the children and every participant was awarded a medal.

The runs were mostly social but one or two runners took them seriously and finished in excellent time. Reflective flags guided runners along the route under dark clouds.

“There was a bit of hype about the storm that night but thankfully I was the last person on the field when the rain came,” Block added.

“We had great feedback from people on social media so we will definitely host a Halloween Run next year. I would like to say thank you for every participant and everyone who dressed up and created excitement around the event.”

Run Zone Athletics Club will next host an event, The Last Half Marathon, on 29 November as the club’s final big run of the year.

Athletics South Africa has capped runs at 10km due to Covid-19 restrictions but plans are underway to give the run a staggered start so up to 1 000 people can enter and the run can be bumped up to 21km.

Then, the inaugural Joburg North City Marathon which was such a success as a virtual run in August this year, will return as a normal run on 7 March.

It will act as a qualifier for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons.
