Athletes take part on the Rekkie Tekkie challenge

PRAEGVILLE – Local athletics academy gives its members the Rekkie Tekkie Challenge to do.

The nationwide lockdown has kept many people at home for three weeks, but that has not stopped athletes from I Have Talent (IHT) Sports Academy from training and doing the Rekkie Tekkie Challenge.

The Randburg Sports Complex-based athletics group has given its members a challenge they can do at home to help counter the gloom one may feel during inactivity.

“The South African Championships 2020 were scheduled for 27 and 28 March, but due to the country going into lockdown the event was postponed,” said the academy’s co-owner, Leandri Willis.

“IHT was very disappointed since we had three athletes that qualified for the event in six different items – Amae de Klerk, Tsiamo Motsamai and Oluchi Ndubeze. It is a challenging time for our athletes to stay positive, active and to prepare for the upcoming championships, especially because there is no specific date set.”

She said coaches at the academy were preparing their athletes mentally and physically with help from their parents. The athletes received a training programme they could follow at home, and the coaches also prepared a challenge for them.

Coaches encourage every athlete to take on the Rekkie Tekkie Challenge.

“All you need are elastic bands and a pair of tekkies.”

The challenge involves tying an elastic band between two objects so that it is stretched and elevated at about ankle height. The athlete, wearing tekkies, then jumps back and forth over the elastic band and alternating their feet so they jump with both feet, and then each foot.

The elastic bands can be raised higher once the athlete has the hang of it.

Athletes can upload videos of themselves doing the challenge on Facebook and attach the #rekkietekkiechallenge hashtag.

Willis said the coaches looked forward to seeing the athletes after lockdown and aimed to start pre-season at the end of July.
