Randburg Cricket Club looks forward to exciting season conclusion

PRAEGVILLE – Local cricket outfit looks towards a scintillating final few weeks in the season.

Randburg Cricket Club has enjoyed a fruitful season in its various leagues and looks forward to a closely-contested finish to some of them in the next few weeks.

“Our biggest goal for this season is getting our Premier B League team promoted to Premier A, and we are well on course being 24 points clear of second place,” said club captain, Harry Lediga.

“Another goal of ours is to grow the women’s team in the coming season.”

While Randburg’s men’s teams have three or four games left in the season, depending on which Central Gauteng Lions league they are in, the women’s 1st team has five games left to play.

They are currently third on the log and Lediga hopes their success will attract more girls and women to the sport.

“Highlights for me have been the Premier team’s performance so far this season, as well as our SU1 [Sunday 1 League] team currently sitting in third place.”

It has not all been smooth sailing this season, however. Lediga lamented how the tough economic climate made it hard to attract sponsors to the club this year.

He also said the club was learning to find the best way to integrate younger players into higher division sides.

“This year we also learnt the value of building relationships with other clubs.”

Lediga described Randburg Cricket Club as one that provided the opportunity for players to advance their cricket as well as enjoy the game.

“We have structures that accommodate all types of players. All new members who join the club quickly find that it’s not just club members but we are like family.”

The club has its own bar and clubhouse and two state-of-the-art cricket fields. A junior section is also thriving and private coaching is done at the grounds.
