Professional cyclist’s fight for funding

FONTAINBLEAU – Community urged to get on board to get cyclist to Toko for the Olympic Games.

Having competed in the world’s toughest cycling tournaments and events, Fontainebleau resident Jean Spies looks to represent South Africa at this year’s Olympic Games.

Unfortunately being an international professional athlete comes with at a hefty price tag and Spies has had his fair share of financial struggles. From flying to the next destination for training or having to replace a stolen bike, the costs involved have pushed Spies to continuously plead with people to help fund his dream.

Spies expressed that the lack of funding in this field has pushed him to do all he can to pay whichever bill comes next, all while having a six-day a week training schedule. The cyclist stated that on average he spends R1 286 weekly on the gym and track training sessions. He went on to say, “If I want to do a single motor pace session which is an absolute must when you are a sprinter on the international stage it will cost a minimum of R4 560 per hour.” This results in a bill of just under R10 000 a month for three weekly gym sessions, a few track sessions and one motor pace session. This, including flights, food, accommodation, equipment and competition fees becomes a difficult set of expense to handle without a reliable financial support structure.

Fortunately enough for Spies, he has been able to get funding throughout the years. He stated that as he got into fundraising for his sporting needs, he was surprised to the kindness of people. He expressed, “Fundraising has opened my eyes to see just how generous the public can be. To those that have supported me, I want you to know how thankful I am.”

With less than six months to go until the Olympic Games in Toyko, Japan, Spies is pleading with the public to help him make there and make the country proud. He shared, “I am in dire need of help to push through the last bit that will give me the best shot at a medal. Funding is the biggest concern and issue thus I am asking is there anyone out there that is willing to help.” Any donations, even as little as R50 or any potential sponsorship will be highly appreciated.

Those interested in making a donation can do so on his crowdfunding page. Alternatively, you can contact Jean Spies for details on donations and banking details on 072 597 9536.
