Avid cyclists get ready for the annual 947 Ride Joburg

JOBURG – Cyclists will begin and finish their loop of Joburg at the Riversands Commercial Park.

Avid cyclists are once again getting ready to set off on the annual Discovery 947 Ride Joburg race.

This year cyclists will be setting off on 17 November from the Riversands Commercial Park. Last year, the route was reversed from previous years and will stay the same way for this year’s ride. This means that cyclists will face the tough cluster of steep hills in the first 10km of the race.

A notable point of interest includes the landmark Nelson Mandela Bridge, as cyclists make their toward the Central Business District.

Jan Smuts Avenue through Randburg is a long downhill, but the climb from Craighall Park to Hyde Park is a tough uphill, as is the stretch past the Johannesburg Zoo. On the other hand, the M1 is a speedy set of downhills, and the home stretch from the turn off Summit Road into Mnandi Road will be a welcomed freewheel to the finish line.

The Discovery 947 Ride Joburg is the world’s second-largest timed cycling race that attracts thousands of cyclists, ranging from beginners to elite, every year Supported and hosted by the City of Joburg, cyclists will get to enjoy a safe ride with full road closures on the route.

Discovery’s chief marketing officer, Firoze Bhorat, said, “We’re thrilled to join 947 and set the pace in our home city by hosting the Discovery 947 Ride Joburg. For many years, this signature Joburg event has created an opportunity for people to improve their health outcomes by participating in an iconic city race, and to make lasting memories along the way.”
