Best bowlers honoured

BOSKRUIN – Randburg Bowls Club's top bowlers are honoured at its prize-giving ceremony.

Randburg Bowls Club honoured its best bowlers at their annual prize-giving ceremony.

There were a number of good performers, but two in particular stood out.

Sixteen-year-old Lethabo Mathibela proved that bowls is not only a game for the older generation but appeals to youngsters as well, by winning the clubs men’s singles handicap competition, beating many a fancied opponent along the way.

The star performer for the club this past year was Sannie van Niekerk, who won no less than six trophies for the past bowls season.

Van Niekerk, who is still a novice bowler, has only been playing under three years. She showed that she is a star of the future. A tennis player who competed on the international tennis circuit including Wimbledon for three years, Van Niekerk won the following club titles: Women’s open singles; women’s senior singles; women’s handicap singles and women’s drawn pairs.

Van Niekerk also beat the men’s open champion to win the title of the overall singles champion

In addition, Van Niekerk was named the Randburg bowler of the year, doing the best in internal as well as provincial and district competitions.

President of the bowls club, Laurie Stafford said, “We are extremely excited about our talented new bowlers coming through, Sannie will go from strength to strength. Well done Sannie and all of the winners.”
