Dominick Aoun does it again
BORDEAUX – Dominick Aoun defends his SA Championship title through mental and technical strength.
“There is nothing I do not like about wrestling. I will only stop when I am 99 million years old.”
Local wrestling sensation, Dominick Aoun (11) said this to the Randburg Sun after he won the South African Wrestling Championship for the second year in a row.
The Bordeaux resident who only began wrestling close to three years ago said he trained very hard after he had found a fortune cookie that told him ‘whatever you put in you get out’.
“I trained twice a day for the weeks before the competition,” the Delta Park School learner said.
“I had to fight the champion of the SA president’s division [Johan von Landsberg] in the early rounds and I won that. I had to be mentally and technically good. I was confident and fit.”
While the U11 division matches could stretch into two rounds, Dominick won four of his matches by pinning his opponent down in the first round, scoring extra points, at the tournament in Pretoria.
Dominick trains at Ruiter Wrestling Club in Ruimsig.
His father and assistant coach, Fadi Aoun said the youngster has seen an improvement in his concentration and discipline at school.
Dominick aims to wrestle at major tournaments in Europe and was already selected to compete at the Tallinn Open in Estonia in March.
Fadi explained that the tournament features some of the best wrestlers from each weight division and pits them against each other.
Two of the youngster’s heroes in sport are American wrestler Jordan Burroughs and Russian mixed martial artist Khabib Nurmagomedov.
