Rhythmic gymnast, Kayla Rondi represents SA in Russia

JOHANNESBURG – The 15-year-old Randpark Ridge resident is back home after representing South Africa at the first-ever Junior Rhythmic World Championships in Moscow, Russia.

With a smile and the grace of a seasoned gymnast twice her age, Kayla Rondi can perform almost any trick with the ribbon, clubs, rope, and ball – the apparatus used in rhythmic gymnastics.

There, the Trinityhouse Randpark Ridge learner achieved a first-place finish in the individual trials and performed respectably in the actual championships.

“I learnt about how much hard work is required at that level and it inspired me,” Kayla said in between routines at Gold Reef Rhythmic Gymnastics in Berario.

Maureen van Rooyen, who has instructed Kayla for five years, described her as a natural dancer who trains hard.

“We need competitions like this where she can compete against the top rhythmic gymnasts in the world,” Van Rooyen said.

“Kayla works hard and prepares hard for her competitions. She had no drops on the first day with the rope or the ball, which was excellent.”

The youngster fell in love with rhythmic gymnastics, at first sight, saying it allows her to pursue her passion and love she has for the sport at every competition.

The sport allows her to be the best she can be and even inspire others through her performances.

The sport also challenges her to tackle her fears when performing and work hard in training.

Last year, Kayla won a silver medal at the African Championships and finished in first place at the Apparatus Finals SA at the SA Gym Games, where she also finished second overall.
