Shumbas Hockey Club together with UJ Youth Club hosted a hockey festival at the UJ Astro hockey fields.

One of the festival organisers Madeleine Burger said this festival was important as the initiative was a way to grow the sport at development level. Various hockey clubs around southern Gauteng participated.

Festivals such as these are part of SA Hockey’s growth strategy to expose more children to the sport.

Burger believes what sets hockey apart from other sports is that there is no age limit. “You can play up to grand master level, and that in age is your late 70s.”
