A champion bird at Randpark Golf Club

RANDPARK – The Budgerigar Society of South Africa hosted its National Championship Show and there, Joburg native, Tommie Roodt's bird took home the title of Champion Bird of the Year.

The Budgerigar Society of South Africa recently held its annual SA’s National Championship Show and there, Tommie Roodt took home the coveted prize of the show: Champion Bird of the Year.

The show took place on 26 and 27 July and was attended by bird breeders and birds enthusiasts, alike.

This would be Roodt’s fourth champion bird win but you would not know as his humility has his ego rooted firmly in the ground and not flying too close to the sun. He has been breeding for about 31 years now and started as a way to de-stress from the everyday pressures of life. “It is so relaxing after hours just going into your birdroom and seeing what’s in there,” he shared.

Roodt explained that it is never easy to win champion bird at a national level but acknowledged that he has been lucky to win it four years in a row. “You have to put a lot of effort, as the condition of the bird is essential and you need to look after well.”

Roodt breeds over 200 birds and entered 40 birds into the show. He explained that he selected all the ones in better condition and hoped for the best.

The Joburg native said breeding for him is a great hobby and is not done for the glory of winning, “You have to do it for the love of it, and the more time you put in, the better the results and you just need to stick at and keep on breeding – the more you breed the better your chances.”
