Diggers Club hosts rugby festival

PRAEGVILLE – The Diggers Rugby Club hosted the second week of the Rugby Youth League and embraces John Smit's handshake challenge.

On 20 July, in the second week of the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) Youth Rugby League Season, Diggers Juniors hosted Bryanston Honey Badgers, Randfontein, Pirates, Alberton and the U18 side from Witbank at the club located at the Randburg Sports Complex.

Diggers Rugby Club has been running for 126 years and is still going strong.

The junior section is currently made up of 350 players from the age groups U6–U18 and has continued to multiply every year.

Diggers wished to be viewed as more than a rugby club, but rather as a place where friendships were formed, and family is chosen. The club has prided themselves on upholding Integrity, Respect and Discipline as their core family values. This was clear in the laid-back, communal atmosphere on the sidelines.

The values mentioned above have led to the accepted rugby legend John Smit’s handshake challenge. This was in full effect at their hosted games on 20 July.

The handshake challenge encompassed Integrity, Respect and Discipline, it has been a way for enforced gentlemanly behaviour and the maintained friendship off the field. The handshake challenge encouraged putting your heart and soul into the game, without malice. So all the age groups took a few minutes before each game to shake hands with their opponents and then they took the field to play for their respective clubs with pride.

The GLRU Youth Rugby IPT (Inter Provincial Tournament) trials have been scheduled for August and the Diggers U13–U18 boys are preparing hard for this opportunity.

Six junior rugby clubs, 59 teams including doubles teams and 32 games resulted in a full day of junior rugby that kicked off at 7.30am and ended at 5.30pm.
