Hillcrest Academy celebrates Youth Day

RANDBURG – It is with 16 June where you see learners getting together to commemorate the history of their people and their efforts

Hillcrest Cambridge Academy learners and teachers recently marched together in the streets of Randburg to celebrate Youth Day.

According to the school’s principal Rose Murandu, they celebrate Youth Day in commemoration of the fallen heroes from Soweto who demonstrated in 16 June in their fight for equality in education. “Sixteen June has been part of our yearly curriculum and has improved the knowledge of our learners.

“We also commemorate this day as a lesson in history for every learner to know where they are coming from and also where they are going.”

Learners performed various activities on the day. “The learners were presenting poetry, speeches, dramas, songs and dancing in commemoration of the youth day.”

When asked the purpose of the event Lyson said, “The history of this day helps us to develop the leaders of tomorrow.”

According to the head boy of the school Felix Midzi, this is not just an ordinary public holiday day but a day to remember the heroes who have fallen.

“Not every South African learner or student knows what happened on 16 June. That is why we were demonstrating through drama, music and also speeches so that those who were not aware, can understand how important this day is to everyone,” he said.
