Hockey Wars are fierce but fun

PRAEGVILLE – It's fierce but fun at the Hockey Wars at Randburg Hockey Stadium.

Randburg Hockey Stadium was once again the place to be for fans of the sport, thanks to another sensational Hockey Wars tournament from 8 to 10 March.

A whopping 29 teams and 480 players competed in the eighth tournament that saw top-level premier league players and social players mingle and demonstrate their skills before the winter hockey season gets underway.

“The aim of the tournament has always been a social one, so many teams hang around and support other players or enjoy the day in the sun,” said event organiser, Ryan Folster.

Live music from Mc Andy, Easy Freak, Charlie Finch and Sutherland helped in this regard.

After a round robin between the 14 men’s and 15 women’s teams, the winners of the tournament were revealed. Rastafarians won the men’s section after winning all four of their games. Carvers finished as close runners-up after winning all their games but falling short on goal difference.

MSG won the women’s section. The top goal scorer of the tournament was Amber Dry from MSG with seven goals. Devon Cambell from Carvers was the top men’s goal scorer with five goals.

“Hockey Wars was happy to have two development hockey sides playing in the tournament. The first was Silver Stars who are from Diepsloot, they have played since the first tournament in 2017 and it was great having them back again.”

The second team was Cicelo Development Hockey.

“The two development teams which usually play on a grass or gravel field showed amazing skill and ability on the day. This was one of the tournament highlights.”

Folster added that sponsors 86 Public, Get In My Belly Food Blog and Lindsay Saker Midrand sponsored prizes for the top goal scorers, winning teams and other spot prizes.
