Run for Valentine’s and for charity

PRAEGVILLE – Republic Road will be closed for a short while, and there will be minor traffic congestion expected in Randburg.

Randburg Harriers is again ready to host the loveliest 10km run in Joburg.

The annual run, now called the Hot 91.9 Valentine’s Night Race, will be held on 15 February. The route starts at Randburg Sports Complex and makes its way through the neighbouring suburbs before returning to the complex.

Race director, Liesl Koch said more is being done this year for the three charities that will benefit from the event; these being Ann Harding Cheshire Homes, Wandsworth School and Little Rose Centre.

“Ann Harding Cheshire Homes will be selling pancakes as well to raise money,” Koch said.

“And if you contribute to one of the charities you will go into a draw for champagne tasting.”

Koch said the run will again have a ‘party vibe’, with Hot 91.9FM playing music on the route, and the live band, Brent Harris and Thee Jam, playing at the start and finish.

Solar jars will light up Maria Road, and marshalls and Metro police officials will keep runners safe on the road and following the correct route.

The run starts at 7pm, and has a cap of 7 000 entrees. Organisers expect runners to all be finished by 8.30pm. Republic Road will be closed from the intersection with Silver Pine Avenue to Malibongwe Drive from 6.45pm to about 7.10pm.

There will be no more road closures but traffic congestion can be expected on the corner of Rabie Street and Annie Road, as well as various roads in Praegville, Malanshof, Moret, Ruiterhof, Fontainebleau, Robin Hills, Robindale, Jacanlee and Randpark.

Koch said for the first time there will be a ‘sweeper’ who will walk at the back and encourage the last runners and ensure their safety.
