NORTH RIDING – South Africa’s best motocross and freestyle motocross athletes will be back in North Riding for this year’s King of the Whip.

The free event, presented by LW Mag and Monster Energy in association with Motul, PlayStation and Fox Racing, will see these athletes battle it out for R40 000 in prizes on 2 February.

The ultimate winner will be crowned King of the Whip for their bravery and skill in doing the most spectacular tricks and whips in the air. A whip is when the rider turns the rear of the motorcycle around to the side while in the air.

In very extreme whips, the rear of the motorcycle will end up perpendicular to the direction of travel, in addition to the motorcycle being laid flat.

Alastair Sayer was a hot contestant at the King of the Whip last year.

Last year’s winner, Dallan Goldman said it was not easy doing tricks while ramping in the air and it took years of practice and ‘baby steps’ to reach this level.

“I decided to just go have fun and not exert myself too much. I guess I was just lucky [to win]. I did a lot of flips and whip tricks for the crowd,” he said at the time.

The third annual event also introduces an FMX best trick contest, with both right-side-up and up-side-down categories.

The event kicks off at Biker’s Warehouse, Aureole Avenue, at 4pm, with prize-giving scheduled at 9pm. Riders will be split into groups and will have to qualify through the jam session rounds. Judges will be looking for style, amplitude and variation, and riders that score high enough points will advance to the finals.

“We’ve been waiting excitedly for a whole year and we’re finally back,” said event organiser, Ryan van der Spuy.

“We’ve upped the ante for this year’s King of the Whip, bringing bigger-and-better to both the riders and spectators. It is going to be extremely fun, crazy and exciting,”

He thanked the event partners for helping to make the free event possible and enabling SA’s top riders to showcase their skills.

There will be food and beverages on sale. For more info and updates follow the Facebook event page.
