Bordeaux wrestler becomes SA youth champion

BORDEAUX – Dominick Aoun proves unbeatable as a wrestler at SA Youth Championships.

Look out wrestling world, here comes Dominick Aoun, South Africa’s new youth wrestling champion.

The 10-year-old Bordeaux resident went up against 11 other top wrestlers his age at the SA Youth Championships in Cape Town in October.

Through an elimination process, Dominick beat four of these wrestlers to become the national champion.

The result also led to him earning South African colours for the second time.

“I was so happy I actually cried,” the youngster told Randburg Sun afterwards. “It was quite hard so I was very technical and strong [when competing].”

The Delta Park School learner only started wrestling in July last year, at the Danie van Zyl Wrestling Club in Newlands.

Dominick said he started wrestling to get fit and improve his focus. Within two weeks he fought at his first competition.

There, he impressed the organisers so much that he was awarded qualification to the youth champs, where he won best newcomer of the competition and his first SA colours.

“I love wrestling. I train hard, I do push-ups and sit-ups, running and training every day. I also always eat healthily,” the youngster said.

Dominick explained that he used to be bullied when he was younger, but wrestling helped him take his anger out in a safe way.

Needless to say, he is bullied no longer.

Dominick also does soccer, athletics and climbing.

“Wrestling is my favourite sport. There is nothing about it I don’t like. My favourite move is a leg attack and a suplex.”

The young wrestler will next compete in a club competition on 1 December.
