I Have Talent bags gold medals at Central Gauteng Athletics event
PRAEGVILLE – Randburg's athletics group goes the distance at Central Gauteng Association League 1 event.
Athletics is in full swing at the Randburg Sports Complex, with the group I Have Talent already bagging at least two gold medals at its first competition.
Since the group was launched in August, in association with SuperKids, children aged 5 to 18 have been keeping the fields busy every day with short and long distance running, sprints, high jump, long jump, shot put, javelin and hurdles.
The youngest of the athletes do basic physical development with mini-obstacles including low hurdles, cones and flat ladders that develop their coordination and technique to help them in sports later in life.
When Leandri Willis, who heads the athletics group, took her talented athletes to the Central Gauteng Athletics League 1 event in Germiston on 15 September, spirits were high.
But they were even higher on the trip home after Hailey van Niekerk and Timeke-Jade Coetzee won the U11 and U12 long jump competitions respectively.
The sprints were completed in heats, so it may turn out that the group won more medals after the results are released.
This has left everyone excited for the League 2 event on the weekend of 29 September.
“Athletics is in a great place in South Africa at the moment,” said Willis.
“Athletics South Africa is doing a lot to promote the sport with its events, so it is a good time to start athletics if you are interested.”
She invited any youngsters eager to get active to contact the club or visit on a weekday afternoon or Saturday morning.
