Randburg Sports Complex starts athletics, relaunches netball
PRAEGVILLE – It is all fun and games as sports are launched at Randburg Sports Complex.
Athletics and netball enthusiasts can get excited because these sports are now played at the Randburg Sports Complex.
Athletics was kicked off and netball was relaunched during a sports open day on 25 August.
The occasion was the unveiling of SuperKids, a company that runs sports for children aged four to 18, to the Randburg public.
It ended with a softball match played by everyone involved.
I Have Talent, an athletics club, and Sparta Netball partnered with SuperKids along with Randburg Mets Baseball Club for the launch.
Their initiative has seen the renovation of a disused patch of ground near the Mets clubhouse to turn it into a grassed multi-purpose facility for sport.
The ground is not quite ready yet, but a long jump pit has been built, and athletes will soon also do high-jump, shot-put, javelin, discus, running and hurdles.
Leandri Willis, who runs I Have Talent, said athletics would take place every weekday afternoon and Saturday morning.
The club competes in Central Gauteng Athletics events at Ruimsig Athletics Stadium.
Deteriorating netball courts were an eyesore for Sparta Netball, with the City of Johannesburg telling them they have no money to repair them.
But the initiative will see the courts renovated through private funding.
“We have run netball here for eight years but we are relaunching today,” said Sophia Botha, head of the club. “We have a great presence already. We have both a women’s and a men’s team.”
Youngsters played soccer and netball and tried out the long jump before everyone enjoyed some snacks and watched the coaches of SuperKids and I Have Talent take each other on in a friendly softball match.
SuperKids owner, Leon Delport said the company’s programme works on developing motor skills and hand-eye coordination to help children excel at any sport they want to play.
