Winter season heats up

RANDBURG – Winter season heats up despite chill

The Rand Central Local Football Association’s Ladies Winter League is heating up despite temperatures dropping across the country.

Top of the log Akani Ladies team has played eight games and have 22 points but they are not far ahead of the competition. Wits CHRL Ladies is second on 18 points with two games in hand, while local team Bantwana College Football Club is sitting in third position, with a game in hand and are tied on points with Wits Ladies.

Another local team that is fighting for the league is Randburg Ladies, sitting in fourth position on 15 points. They have three matches in hand over Akani.

Bantwana College coach Theo Buttress is surprised and pleased that his team is fighting for the league.

“Our first seven games in the league have been great and I am over the moon at our results,” said Buttress.

“Our initial goal was to finish the season in the top four but now it looks like we can make a push to win the league. Because if we win the league, we can move onto the regional league and the players can test themselves against other top teams.”

The biggest match Buttress is looking forward to is the local derby between his team and Randburg Ladies on 20 July. What makes the match extra spicey is that Buttress was once the coach of Randburg, bringing them to greater heights during his tenure.

“It will be a great game but the focus should be on the players. They have been working hard since their disappointment in the summer league and they took those experiences to heart. Their positive attitude and willingness to improve has been a motivating factor for them.”
