Joburg rugby coaches give Kolisi the thumbs up, but want form to improve

JOBURG – Coaches of four Joburg rugby clubs give Siya Kolisi the thumbs up as Springbok captain, but two of them want his form to improve.

Coaches of four rugby clubs in Joburg say Siya Kolisi was the right choice as the new Springbok captain.

Two of the coaches, however, say his form as a player will need to improve.

The flanker will lead the Springboks in a series against England starting on 9 June. He will be the first black man to ever captain the Springboks in an official Test match.

Lindinhlanhla Mngadi, the chairperson of the Wanderers Rugby Club, said the appointment was overdue.

“Kolisi was vice-captain last year when Warren Whiteley was injured but Eben Etzebeth was appointed captain. That makes no sense,” he said. “Kolisi has proven he has leadership potential and performs well on the world stage.”

Pirates Rugby Club chairperson, Brad Guymer agreed that the appointment was overdue.

“Kolisi has shown leadership qualities and will be a good guy against England, although his form as a player has not been so good lately,” he said.

While Diggers Rugby Club chairperson, Riaan Matthys said Kolisi’s recent performances have been sub-par, he agreed that there was probably no better player for the position.

“He is probably the best option and has experience, though he has not been as good as he was last year. But maybe he will step it up now he is captain,” he said.

Alexandra Rugby Football Club manager, Elias Mpengu was full of praise for Kolisi, alluding to his ability to motivate his teammates, and also his experience as the Stormers captain.
