Athletics duo’s rich experiences in Paarl

ROBINDALE – Laerskool Unika duo excel in national competition

Timeke Coetzee and Robert Endrödy represented their school and province at the South Africa Schools Athletics Championships in Paarl.

The duo qualified for the national competition by excelling at the Gauteng Athletics Championships held earlier this year.

Timeke (12) won two gold medals, one in long jump and the second in the 100m relay. She also finished in fourth position in the 100m sprint event.

This year marked the third occasion Timeke has competed in the national competition and she said her experiences will mould her into a better athlete.

“It was fun to be there with my friends and I enjoyed my time with them. But the one lesson I learned is that no matter how short you are, it’s still possible to be the best.”

Her sentiments were echoed by Robert (11) who was in Paarl for the very first time, and was excited to compete.

Although disaster struck as he was injured during the 70m hurdles, this has not dampened his spirit.

“I was nervous to walk out and see all the other athletes but also very excited. Unfortunately, while competing in hurdles, I knocked my knee against the hurdles bar and I ended my race in sixth position.

“But now I know that I have to work harder and increase my attributes so I can do even better next year.”
