Saints Sports Fest 2018: Third day games trump rainy weather

LYME PARK – The Saints Sports Festival 2018 kicked off on 28 March.

On the third day of the Saints Sports Festival, St Stithians College’s grounds were fully packed. Hockey, netball, rugby, tennis, cross country and squash games continued. even as the rain started to pour down.

Late afternoon, just most games wrapped up, the Saints’s first got ready to take on Cape Town’s Bishops Diocesan College on the soaked Baytop Field. By halftime, the clouds cleared and the crowd could enjoy the last bit of sunset. But the match proved to be tough nevertheless. Saints scored at the last minute, ending the game with Bishops winning 34 – 7.

Earlier the day, Saints’ netball team took the lead against the Diocesan School for Girls Grahamstown with a final score of 24 – 19.

At the end of the day, close to 70 games were played with just about as many schools participating, from neighbouring Fourways to all the way from Windhoek.

The Saints Sports Festival 2018 kicked off with the opening matches of soccer, squash and tennis matches on 28 March.

Schools from across the country descended on the St Stithians sports fields and courts eager to get the events started.

On the school’s Ridgeway Field, fellow scholars and parents cheered as Saints football team took on Alexandra Secondary School.

Saints dominated the first match running out 5–1 victors.

On the tennis courts, Saints number one and two players, Justin Liebenberg and Kyle Johnson respectively, kicked off the proceedings against Pretoria Boys High School.

The Saints duo will face players of St David’s Marist Inanda, Clifton School, Grey College and St Benedicts in the coming days.

Saint Stithians Boys’ College headmaster David du Toit said, “The [tennis] players will compete for the Kevin Anderson Trophy… Kevin is an old boy of the college and the trophy was presented by him to encourage and inspire excellence in this popular sport.”
