Randburg JVW competes in first tournament

PRAEGVILLE – Local soccer side shows its mettle in first competitive tournament.

The Randburg JVW team was not found wanting at its first competitive tournament, which proved a baptism of fire.

The outfit based at Randburg Football Club went up against the best at the Bantwana College Girls’ and Ladies’ Football Tournament at Allen Glen High School, Weltevreden Park, on 17 March.

Competing at the tournament were Blue Birds and DK Stars, two teams that play in South Africa’s premier women’s soccer league, the Sasol Women’s League.

But Randburg JVW held its own by qualifying for the semi-finals and narrowly losing to the mighty Blue Birds 1–0.

It also took a penalty shoot-out for Old Parks Soccer Club to beat Randburg JVW in the third/fourth position play-off.

“I would say watch this space, there is no reason why this talented team could not finish right at the top of the log in the [Rand Central Local Football Association] League,” said coach Gabriela Salgado.

Salgado has only just taken up the coaching reins after recent years in the game saw her play for South Africa’s national U17 and U21 teams.

The proud coach explained that the side has a good mix of experienced and young players with potential, and no shortage of skill.

“One of the areas we are really growing in is teamwork. That is the most important thing. You cannot win tournaments without it. And when players encourage each other to never give up, then they never give up.”
