Linden tennis star aims for Wimbledon

LINDEN – Höerskool Linden's Alec Beckley aims to make the South African National Tennis Team for the second year running.

Höerskool Linden’s Alec Beckley aims to make the South African U19 national tennis team for the second year running.

Beckley is the number one ranked U19 tennis player in Gauteng and will represent South Africa if he qualifies to do so in April.

“I played in the Gauteng schools U19 inter-pro trials and came first,” said Beckley.

In April, Beckley will be attending a competition in Pretoria where all the top U19 players from across the country will be competing for top spot.

He said, “If I place first in my province, I will be selected for the SA team.”

The winners of the tournament get to go to Wimbledon. “Last year I made the national team and went on tour to Wimbledon… It was an experience of a lifetime.”

After Wimbledon, the South African U19 tennis team will compete in a tournament against the best schools in the UK and other visiting countries.

Marianne Gouws of Höerskool Linden said, “We are so proud of Alec’s accomplishment… He actually moved to Linden to better balance his school and sporting career.

“One of our strengths as a school is that we see top performers as unique, and we try to adapt wherever we can so that they can achieve their goals.”
